Disney Chat Transcript Highlights
January 26, 1999

Look for our questions under the name, Nancy Fan!
They're highlighted in red.

Nancy Fan: Hi Nancy! You’re wonderful. I was wondering if you plan to return to Champions on Ice next year?
Nancy Kerrigan: I’m doing one show on February 5th for the Champions on Ice Tour and after that I don’t plan to do anymore. It’s in Greenville, South Carolina.

Mickeymouse89: How hard is it to be on ice?
Nancy Kerrigan: I guess it’s as hard as anything is difficult when you’re just starting but like with anything with practice it gets easier. I’ve been skating for 23 years.

Nancy Fan: Nancy, what was your favorite competitive program?
Nancy Kerrigan: I can’t even remember some of them. I guess the one I was most proud of was the 94 Olympics. There was so much going on that for me to stay focused was difficult but was something I had worked on in the past, to stay focused.

Tbowmeyer: where duser_id you learn to skate?
Nancy Kerrigan: In Stoneham, Massachusetts.

Nancy Fan: Nancy, are you still good friends with Paul Wylie and Kristi Yamaguchi?
Nancy Kerrigan: Paul and I were very close friends and still are. Although our schedules are very different and we don’t see much of each other anymore. We trained together for ten years with the same coaches and we shared a house together in Cape Cod. Kristi and my touring schedules have been practically opposite, so we don’t see each very much.

Nancy Nut: Which character in Grease do you relate to more-Sandy or Rizzo?
Nancy Kerrigan: I don’t know if I relate to either one of them in my personal life but I think I skate more like Rizzo. So doing Sandy is a bit more fun for me.

Angelmel: Will the tour of Grease be coming to Massachusetts?
Nancy Kerrigan: No it won’t. The owners have the touring show of Grease here in MA, and they don’t put the skating show in the same place at the same time.

Dblld: Do you have to pay for your outfits?
Nancy Kerrigan Not in the Grease tour but most of my other outfits I do, yes.

Conniepar: what’s the most uncomfortable thing you ever wore?
Nancy Kerrigan: (laughs) So many! I’ve worn so many costumes, it is hard to think of one on the spot. My 92 Olympic dress which became famous was VERY uncomfortable because it duser_idn’t stretch.

Kaylyn: How much do you practice?
Nancy Kerrigan: It just depends because I have a schedule where I am constantly traveling and my schedule is always changing.

Nancy Fan: Are there any up and coming skaters that you are fond of?
Nancy Kerrigan: I duser_id see Michelle Kwan recently and she looks better than ever. Hmm.

Nancy Nut: What is your favorite part of your job as your skater?
Nancy Kerrigan: Performing. I love to perform. Practicing is not that much fun because the ice rinks are usually very cold.

Kaylyn: How often do you practice for a show?
Nancy Kerrigan: It depends on the show and if I have a routine already or not. I try to get new routines and new outfits often. Because when I watch skating I think it gets boring seeing the same skating over and over again.

Michael98: What’s the hardest maneuver to pull off?
Nancy Kerrigan: I think the hardest maneuver to pull off is when I am disappointed, to act like I’m not disappointed because that’s what people want to see.

Nancy Fan: How does it feel to hear other skaters saying they look up to you and grew up user_idolizing you?
Nancy Kerrigan: I think it sounds amazing. Nothing like I ever thought would happen but it’s an honor, really.

Unknown: I’m from Japan! What is your favorite place to visit?
Nancy Kerrigan: I’ve been fortunate to travel to so many countries that it’s hard to say which is my favorite. Actually, in Japan when I arrived on the plane there were hundreds of fans waiting for me. It was very exciting!

Dbldd: You are so pretty.
Nancy Kerrigan: Thank you!

Dbldd: My brother loves you, really!
Nancy Kerrigan: (laughs)

Seanna0226: do you ever get many days off to spend with your family?
Nancy Kerrigan: Oh yes, many days actually. When I practice, I’ll often go only when my son is sleeping and he doesn’t even know I’m gone half the time. One reason for doing Grease on Ice is that I’m able to perform and still be home a lot which is very important to me.

Fishy06: How old is your son
Nancy Kerrigan: He turned 2 in December.

Angelmel: Would you entertain an acting career someday?
Nancy Kerrigan: I don’t know. I’ve done some acting but I don’t want it to be so serious that it would take away from my family and I don’t want to move away from home.

Ashley: Are you going to the Olympics again?
Nancy Kerrigan: Not as an athlete. I practice now to keep in shape and be able to perform but I don’t train like an athlete does when they are trying to compete. That takes 24 hours a day and I don’t have that time now, with a family.

Fishyo6: I saw your parade like 4 years ago. I thought it was the greatest thing. You were in a red car.
Nancy Kerrigan: I thought it was great too.

Kaylyn: I’ve been a fan of yours since the first winter Olympics I ever watched and I thought wow how does she keep an audience interested.
Nancy Kerrigan: I think music is very important and my coach is amazing at having the music flow from beginning to end. You have to cut the music from beginning to end so it doesn’t sound like it’s cut.

Nancy Nut: I don’t want you to retire but I know it will happen someday. It won’t be too soon, will it? :-)
Nancy Kerrigan: I’m not really sure. I’m just taking the opportunities that are presented and as long as it continues to be fun and exciting, I’ll continue to skate.

Khktt: Which has made a greater impact on your life: Skating? or motherhood?
Nancy Kerrigan: Motherhood…something I have always wanted to be is a mother. It’s definitely very fulfilling when Matthew looks up to me as though I know everything there is to know. I’m just lucky I love my job.

Angelmel: Does your little boy watch you skate when your on tour?
Nancy Kerrigan: Yes. Actually the Grease tour he loves. After he sees a show it’s hard to get him to take a nap because he won’t stop dancing and singing.

Wmcobrien: Have you taught your baby to skate yet?
Nancy Kerrigan: He’s been on ice, but he just sorts of walks on the ice. He doesn’t really skate yet.

Prhenderson: What is your favorite song to skate to?
Nancy Kerrigan: I think these was a comment on TV last year that I haven’t yet found my style which I think is a great thing. Because I want it to change so that it stays fun for everyone. I think my favorite is I’d Give My Life for You from Miss Saigon.

Nancy Nut: Do you ever take suggestions from fans for music to skate to?
Nancy Kerrigan: I’ve had a lot of suggestions and sometimes I agree with them but I don’t know if it’s their user_idea. My coach has a lot of good user_ideas. She’s been listening to music for so many years that I just really trust her opinion.

Briscoob: I enjoy watching you skate. Who has been your inspiration?
Nancy Kerrigan: Nobody that I can think of. I just enjoy it.

Ashley5804: Out of curiosity, what is your muser_iddle name?
Nancy Kerrigan: Ann

Sparho: Have you ever played hockey?
Nancy Kerrigan: Not organized hockey just hack games with my brothers and friends.

Booboooo: I like your name.
Nancy Kerrigan: Thanks. It was given to me. (Laughs)

Nancy Fan: Will you be keeping your program from Improv-Ice? Please say yes!
Nancy Kerrigan: Oh I don’t even have the music from it. I suppose I could get it but I have no user_idea what I duser_id. I duser_idn’t see it. I’m glad you liked it, I duser_idn’t even know what I was going to do.

Eliza02: What brand are your skates?
Nancy Kerrigan: Harlick

Nancy Nut: What piece of advice do you wish someone had told you before you became famous?
Nancy Kerrigan: I duser_idn’t know I would be famous so I don’t think anyone knew this would happen. It was pretty sudden.

Ccanelos: Do you have a furbie?
Nancy Kerrigan: No I don’t. (laughs) Santa forgot to get me one.

Wmupat: Do you feel like your childhood went by too fast?
Nancy Kerrigan: Yeah but I don’t know anyone who doesn’t feel that way. (Laughs) I’m almost 30 so mine has been over for a while.

Wmcobrien: What’s your favorite move?
Nancy Kerrigan: I think I really enjoy doing delayed jumps. It feels like you fly for second before you turn and land.

Nancy Fan: Nancy, do you ever surf the internet? :)
Nancy Kerrigan: No but I play Mickey Mouse’s Magic Artist (laughs)

Coreym1: How many kuser_ids do you want to have and will they be involved in skating?
Nancy Kerrigan: I don’t know how many. However many we are lucky enough to get. In Minnesota and Canada it seems everyone learns to skate. I hope they at least try!

Allisonjeffbrensara: What do you like to do besuser_ides skating?
Nancy Kerrigan: Lots of things! This weekend we are going snow-mobiling. It’s so nice to be in the muser_iddle of nowhere and look at all the scenery. It’s just so relaxing and beautiful.

Twoko: How was it to win an Olympic medal?
Nancy Kerrigan: Exciting! When I grew up, I never even thought I’d know anyone who was part of the Olympics, let alone to go and win a medal. It was very exciting.

Ataycoco6: Is skating your favorite hobby?
Nancy Kerrigan: I don’t think so. Because now it has become my job. So when I’m not skating, I don’t want to be doing my job. I think it’s just playing with Matthew and my niece.

Benboo: Are there any plans for Halloween on Ice this year?
Nancy Kerrigan: Yes, there are. Some of the plans that start this early, I’m not really involved in yet. I stay more on the creative suser_ide.

Nancy Fan: Nancy, will you ever be returning to the Champions on Ice tour? (I don't know why they submitted thia question twice!)
Nancy Kerrigan: I don’t know. As I sauser_id I’m doing February 5th but I have very good relations with the producer and I’m welcome to join the tour whenever I want. I just have other obligations right now.

Sharfun: How duser_id you come up with the user_idea of "One Enchanted Evening" for Valentines Day?
Nancy Kerrigan: Actually it was my husband’s user_idea. He produced the show. There were so many shows out there that we were trying to come up with something new that people would watch.

Nancy Fan: Do you think you might ever coach or become a commentator when you retire years from now?
Nancy Kerrigan: I don’t know about coaching. I’ve spent so much time in the cold already!!! I’ve done some commentating on Beach Volleyball and doing interviews with people. I interviewed Miss USA. I actually was one of her judges, last year.

Ashley5804: I wish I could grow up to be like you.
Nancy Kerrigan: Thank you. I think that says a lot for my parents.

Moderator: Well it looks like we’re out of time for today’s chat. I want to thank Nancy Kerrigan for taking the time to chat with us today.
Nancy Kerrigan: Goodbye and thanks for still being interested in me!
